What EMDR Can Do For You
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful evidence-based psychotherapy developed to address trauma-related symptoms and other psychological distress.
At Colibri NeuroWellness, EMDR differs from traditional talk therapy by emphasizing the processing of the distressing memory itself, rather than concentrating only on the emotional or cognitive responses associated with it. You do not have to talk about or relive the memory in detail in order to benefit from EMDR.
EMDR uses techniques such as guided eye movements, tapping, or sounds to help both sides of your brain work together in processing difficult memories and the emotions connected to them. This method can lessen the intensity of painful experiences and help you develop healthier, more positive beliefs about yourself.
If you’re struggling with trauma, anxiety, self-doubt, or feeling stuck, EMDR can help you let go of the burdens from your past, find clarity, and move forward to a calmer, more balanced life.

What EMDR Therapy
Can Help With
Heal From Past Experiences & Trauma
Your past experiences don’t have to define your life. EMDR Therapy offers a gentle way to process trauma or painful memories (e.g., accidents, assaults, prolonged abuse or neglect), helping you find peace and move forward. Together, we can help you feel empowered and confident in your ability to heal and leave the past behind.
Restore Your Emotional Balance
EMDR Therapy guides you in uncovering the root causes of difficult emotions from past experiences and helps you resolve them at their source. With consistent support, you can find relief and begin to feel more calm, stable, and in control of your emotions.
Change Your Negative Patterns
If you feel trapped by self-doubt, fear, distressing thoughts, addictions, or compulsions, EMDR Therapy can help you move past these negative patterns. It’s not about pretending your struggles don’t exist, but about giving you the tools to release limiting beliefs and become a healthier, more confident you.
Memory Processing
With EMDR Therapy, you can work through painful memories, lessen their emotional impact, and gain a healthier perspective on what you’ve been through. EMDR also helps with anxiety, depression, panic, phobias, low self-esteem, and trauma from medical events or accidents.
If you’re experiencing grief, EMDR can also provide a supportive space to process your emotions and move through your loss at your own pace. Over time, you’ll find greater peace and room for healing as you navigate your journey.
Reducing Impact
We can help reduce the vividness and emotional intensity of distressing or traumatic memories, which can lead to a decrease in symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and anxiety.
Improve Your Ability To Handle Intense Emotions
When you feel overwhelmed by frustration, sadness, or anger, it’s often hard to know what to do. EMDR Therapy helps you understand what’s causing these strong feelings and teaches you healthier ways to cope. This leads to less emotional overload and more moments of calm and clarity.
Build Self-Awareness And Clarity
Understanding your emotions is often the first step to feeling better. EMDR Therapy helps you explore your feelings and behaviours, giving you a clearer picture of yourself. With this insight, you can make choices with greater confidence and peace of mind.
Strengthen Your Resilience And Emotional Health
You don’t have to keep carrying the weight of past experiences. EMDR Therapy helps you process and release that pain, building your emotional strength along the way. As you heal, you will feel better equipped to handle life’s challenges with a renewed sense of inner peace.

Questions About EMDR
Will I be in control during EMDR?
During Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) sessions, you are always in control of the process. You remain fully awake and alert, and your therapist will regularly check in with you to ensure you feel safe and comfortable. If at any point you feel overwhelmed or need a break, you can pause or stop the session at any time. Your therapist will support you throughout, and nothing happens without your consent. Your comfort and sense of safety are always the top priorities.
What does bilateral stimulation and eye movements mean?
Bilateral stimulation refers to rhythmic, alternating stimulation of both sides of the body or brain. In EMDR Therapy, this is most commonly done through guided eye movements, where you follow your therapist’s fingers or another object moving back and forth. Other forms can include tapping on your hands, listening to alternating sounds, or using vibrating devices. This process helps your brain process and integrate difficult memories and emotions more effectively.
How does bilateral stimulation and eye movements help?
Bilateral stimulation, like guided eye movements, helps your brain work through upsetting memories by getting both sides of your brain involved. This back-and-forth movement is similar to what happens during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, when your brain sorts and stores information.
In EMDR sessions, this technique of moving your eyes back and forth will help you process emotions and feelings that feel stuck or too intense. Your therapist will guide you while you focus on the distressing memory or experience, staying aware of the present and feeling safe as you revisit the past. Over time, your brain is able to make sense of the memory, so it no longer triggers a strong reaction or feels overwhelming.
Is EMDR only for those who experienced trauma?
Although EMDR is best known for treating trauma, it can also be highly effective for many other concerns. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, phobias, stress-related health issues, addictions, or challenging life changes, EMDR can help when past experiences are affecting your emotions, thoughts, or behaviours.
Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?
One of the unique aspects of EMDR is that you are not required to talk extensively about your experience. Instead, your therapist will guide you to focus on the memory in your mind. You can share as much or as little as you wish, and your therapist will support you at your own pace. This approach allows many people to work through difficult memories without having to relive or describe every detail out loud.
Is EMDR safe?
Yes, EMDR is considered a safe and effective form of therapy when provided by a trained and licensed professional. Many people have found relief from distressing memories and symptoms through EMDR. It is normal to experience some strong emotions or physical sensations during or after a session, as your mind processes difficult memories, and you are encouraged to share any concerns or reactions you may have during your treatment.
Can EMDR be done virtually or online?
Yes. Many people find online EMDR therapy just as effective as in-person care, and it can be a convenient option if you have a busy schedule, live far from a provider, or simply feel more comfortable at home. Your therapist will make sure you feel supported and safe throughout the process, and will work with you to adapt the sessions to your needs.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies depending on the individual and the nature of the trauma or issues being addressed. Some people notice improvement in just a few sessions, while others may need longer-term treatment.
