When being understood takes so much effort
You know what you want to say, but you can’t get the thoughts out the way you want to. People may think you are younger or less capable because of the way you sound. When you prepare to speak, you might experience a sudden tightening in your throat or chest, anticipating a moment where a word might get “stuck” or a sound won’t quite form the way you intended. It’s frustrating to see a listener’s expression shift to confusion, or having to repeat yourself multiple times until the effort of being understood feels more exhausting than staying silent.
At Colibri NeuroWellness, we empower you to express your ideas clearly and foster deeper and more authentic connections with the world around you.

What Is Speech-Language Pathology?
By addressing speech production, language processing, and social communication, we can help you build the essential skills needed to express yourself effectively and connect meaningfully with the world around you.
Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) is a clinical discipline dedicated to the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of speech, language and communication disorders across the lifespan. Speech-Language Pathologists work with individuals to address challenges related to speech production, language comprehension and expression, social communication, and cognitive-linguistic skills.
Whether it is the physical tension of a stutter or the uncertainty of your speech’s clarity, these challenges can make you feel as though your voice is a barrier rather than a bridge to connection. You might find yourself choosing shorter words, avoiding certain social situations, or simply saying “nevermind” to avoid the discomfort of a difficult communication moment. This experience can lead to a sense of disconnect between who you are and how the world perceives you, leaving you wishing for a voice that feels as effortless and reliable as the thoughts behind it.
At Colibri NeuroWellness, we bridge the gap between thought and expression. We believe communication should feel empowering; not stressful. Our framework is built to help you and your family members feel understood, supported, and confident every step of the way.

What Speech-Language Pathology Can Help With
Unlock your potential
Acquired Disorders (Aphasia, Apraxia, Dysarthria)
If a traumatic brain injury, stroke, illness, other other neurological event has affected your ability to communicate, Speech-Language Pathology provides individualized therapy to help you regain skills in speaking, understanding, reading, or writing. The approach is tailored to your needs and supports your recovery process.
Problems Understanding or Expressing Language
Difficulties with understanding what others say or expressing yourself can be addressed with an SLP therapist by building vocabulary, practicing following directions, forming sentences, and answering questions. This comprehensive approach helps improve your overall communication skills.
Difficulties With Speech Sounds
For those who find it hard to pronounce specific sounds, SLP offers targeted practice and strategies. In sessions, we will work on these sounds in words and sentences, and learn techniques to use them successfully in everyday conversation.
Motor Speech Issues (e.g., Apraxia)
When speech is affected by difficulty coordinating your mouth muscles, therapy focuses on exercises to strengthen and coordinate these muscles. The goal is to help your brain and mouth work together so you can speak more clearly and be understood with greater ease.
Delays Related To Hearing Loss
For individuals with hearing loss, SLP therapy helps develop clearer speech and stronger language abilities. This may involve using visual cues, practicing listening skills, and collaborating with your hearing care team to support your communication goals.
Challenges With Social Communication
If social interactions are difficult, SLP therapy can help you learn how to start conversations, take turns, and read social cues. Role-playing, practicing eye contact, and learning appropriate responses are some of the ways therapy can make connecting with others easier.
Stuttering or Trouble Speaking Smoothly
If you experience stuttering or interruptions in speech, SLP therapy provides strategies to help you speak more smoothly and comfortably. Sessions may include techniques to adjust your speaking rate, manage anxiety, and increase your confidence in social situations.
Reading & Writing Delays
For those struggling with early reading and writing, SLP therapy focuses on strengthening the connection between sounds and letters, building phonics skills, and expanding vocabulary. These skills lay a solid foundation for academic success. SLP therapy can also help teens and adults with reading and writing skills.
Voice & Resonance Management
SLP therapy can help improve your vocal quality, pitch, and volume, ensuring your voice is used safely and effectively without strain.
Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC)
For individuals with limited or no verbal speech, SLPs implement high-tech and low-tech communication systems, such as speech-generating devices, tablets, or picture boards, to ensure they have a functional way to express their needs and ideas.

What happens in an SLP Session?
We use evidence-based approaches that are personalized to you. Depending on your needs, your Colibri NeuroWellness therapist may integrate different strategies. Our general approach to SLP services is outlined below.

Get To Know You
We begin by listening to your story, discussing your concerns, and understanding your history. This phase is all about building a comfortable relationship with you or your family member and identifying what communication goals are most important at this time.
Initial Evaluation
Next, we complete a gentle, thorough assessment to understand how speech, language, and communication are working right now. This may include play‑based tasks, conversation, reading, or structured activities depending on age and needs.
Identify What’s Getting in the Way
Once we gather information, we look for patterns. We figure out why communication is breaking down – whether it’s motor planning, sound production, language understanding, processing, social communication, or something else.
Set Meaningful Goals
Together, we choose goals that matter in everyday life, such as being understood by friends, following directions with confidence, joining conversations, expressing needs, or rebuilding communication after an injury or illness.
Personalized Therapy Plan
No two people communicate the same way, so no two therapy plans are the same. We choose evidence‑based approaches that fit your strengths, challenges, learning style, and daily routines.
Learn & Practice New Skills
Therapy sessions are supportive and tailored to your or your child’s pace. We model, guide, and practice skills in ways that feel achievable and encouraging. Small steps add up to big changes.
For our younger clients, therapy often looks and feels like play! We use games, toys, and stories to help children reach their developmental milestones in a fun, low-pressure way. We also work closely with parents to provide simple strategies you can use at home during your normal daily routines.
Transfer Skills to Real Life
Communication doesn’t just happen during the therapy session. We help you use new skills at home, at school, at work, and in the community. We also collaborate with caregivers, teachers, and other professionals to make progress stick.
Ongoing Progress Monitoring
Communication needs change over time. We regularly check in, celebrate progress, and update goals or strategies as needed. Our approach stays flexible so therapy always fits where you are right now.

Questions About SLP
How do I know if my child (or I) really need speech therapy?
Many families come to us unsure and that’s completely normal. If communication feels harder than it should be, if people often ask for repeats, or if speech and language skills aren’t developing as expected, an evaluation can give you clarity. You don’t need a diagnosis to start; you just need a concern.
Is SLP only for people who have trouble pronouncing words?
No. While articulation is a major part of SLP, we also help with understanding language, expressing complex thoughts, social communication skills, stuttering, voice health, and even swallowing or feeding difficulties.
Is it too late for an adult to start speech therapy?
It is never too late. While early intervention is highly effective for children, the brain remains capable of learning and adapting throughout adulthood. We work with adults on everything from professional communication and public speaking to recovering skills after a stroke or brain injury.
What happens during the first appointment?
Your first visit is relaxed and conversation‑based. We listen to your concerns, learn about daily routines, and complete age‑appropriate assessments through play, conversation, or structured tasks. By the end, you’ll understand what’s going well, what’s challenging, and what the next steps look like.
What does a typical therapy session look like?
Sessions are engaging, supportive, and tailored to the individual. For children, therapy often looks like play with purpose. For teens and adults, it may involve conversation practice, strategy training, or functional tasks. Every activity is chosen to build real‑life communication skills.
How involved do I need to be?
Active participation is key to success. For pediatric clients, parent involvement is essential for practicing skills at home. For adults, the more you apply the techniques in your daily life (work, social settings, etc.), the faster you will see meaningful progress.
Do I need a formal diagnosis before I can start?
Not necessarily. While some patients come to us with a diagnosis from a doctor or psychologist, we perform our own comprehensive evaluations to identify your specific communication needs and develop a treatment plan.
Can an SLP help with social anxiety related to speaking?
Yes. By providing you with functional tools and increasing your communication competence, SLP therapy can help reduce the anxiety and frustration that often come with feeling misunderstood or “stuck” when trying to speak.
How is SLP different from a tutor or a public speaking coach?
A tutor can help people learn or improve academic skills such as reading and writing, while a public speaking coach focuses on delivery, confidence, and presentation skills rather than treating clinical challenges. Neither a tutor nor a coach can diagnose underlying conditions.
In contrast, a Speech-Language Pathologist is a licensed clinician trained in Speech-Language Pathology who assesses, diagnoses, and treats communication disorders. They work with issues such as stuttering, speech sound errors, literacy delays, language processing difficulties, and voice problems. Using structured and evidence-based therapy, they help clients understand and use proper pitch, intonation, stress, and pauses when communicating in both a 1:1 or group setting.
How long does the process take before results are seen?
The duration of therapy is highly individualized. It depends on the nature of the speech-language, literacy or communication challenge, the frequency of sessions, and how consistently strategies are practiced outside of the clinic. We set specific goals and regularly review progress to ensure therapy is efficient.
