When You Feel Unheard in Your Healthcare
For many women, it can feel frustrating and discouraging when health concerns are not fully heard or understood in a medical appointment. Symptoms may be minimized, dismissed as “normal,” or attributed to stress without deeper exploration. Over time, this can leave you feeling overlooked, unheard, or unsure of whether their concerns are valid. When that happens, it can be difficult to feel confident in the care you’re receiving or to advocate for your own health needs.
At Colibri NeuroWellness, Nurse Practitioners provide patient-centered care that takes the time to listen and thoroughly assess your concerns.

What Can a Nurse Practitioner Help With in Women’s Health?
Feel Heard And Supported
Comprehensive Health Assessments & Diagnosis
Nurse Practitioners are trained to carefully assess your health and diagnose both short-term (acute) and long-term (chronic) conditions. Whether you’re coming in for a routine check-up or a specific concern, they will take the time to listen and understand your health history and current symptoms.
They can help manage a wide range of conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and hormone-related concerns. At Colibri NeuroWellness, our Nurse Practitioners focus especially on women’s health, including menstrual cycles, menopause, sexual health, and reproductive concerns.
Order & Interpret Diagnostic Tests
Nurse Practitioners can order a variety of tests to better understand your health, including blood work, ultrasounds, MRIs, and other imaging. They will review the results with you and use them to help guide your care and treatment plan.
Whether you need a routine test or more detailed imaging, the NPs at Colibri NeuroWellness will make sure you get the right tests and understand what the results mean. For women, this may include tests like pelvic ultrasounds, mammograms, and bone density scans, which are important for monitoring reproductive health and changes during menopause.
Promote Health & Preventive Care
At Colibri NeuroWellness, we focus on helping you stay healthy and prevent illness whenever possible. Nurse Practitioners look for early signs and risk factors for disease and work with you on simple lifestyle changes that can make a big difference over time. This might include support with nutrition, exercise, quitting smoking, or caring for your mental health.
Prescribe Medications
In Ontario, Nurse Practitioners can prescribe many types of medications, including some that are more closely monitored (called controlled substances) when appropriate. This means they can treat a wide range of conditions, such as chronic pain, infections, hormone concerns, and mental health conditions like anxiety and depression.
They can also prescribe medications for women’s health, including birth control, Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), and some fertility treatments. Being able to prescribe medications directly helps Nurse Practitioners provide timely care, so you can start treatment without unnecessary delays.
Collaborative Care with Specialists
One of the benefits of seeing a Nurse Practitioner at Colibri NeuroWellness is that they work closely with other therapy and assessment providers. This can include Psychologists, Social Workers, Psychotherapists, Occupational Therapists, and a Speech-Language Pathologist.
This team-based approach helps ensure your care is complete and tailored to your needs. If you need more specialized care, your Nurse Practitioner will refer you to the right specialist and help coordinate everything so your care is as smooth as possible.

Our Approach To Women's Health
We use evidence-based approaches that are personalized to you.

We Get to Know You
For women’s health concerns, your Nurse Practitioner will begin by taking the time to clearly understand what you’re experiencing and how it is affecting you. This includes reviewing your health history, asking detailed questions about your symptoms, and using simple assessment tools when helpful. The goal is to fully “map out” your concerns so nothing important is missed and your symptoms are understood in context. From there, your NP can better identify possible causes and guide the next steps in your care.
Rule Out Red Flags
Your Nurse Practitioner will review your symptoms carefully to ensure nothing serious is being missed and determine whether further testing, monitoring, or referral is needed to keep your care safe and appropriate.
Perform A Focused Exam
Our Nurse Practitioner will take a closer look at your specific symptoms and health concerns to better understand what may be contributing to them. This step is tailored to you and may include reviewing patterns in your symptoms, lifestyle factors, and medical history. The information gathered helps guide the next steps in your care, including deciding whether any targeted tests or imaging are needed for a clearer picture of your health.
Order Targeted Tests
During this step, your Nurse Practitioner may recommend specific tests, such as blood work or imaging, to help better understand your symptoms. These tests are chosen carefully to provide useful information that can guide your diagnosis and treatment plan.
Tests will only be ordered when they are needed to clarify your condition, confirm a diagnosis, or support safe and effective care. The goal is to ensure every test has a clear purpose and contributes to creating the best possible plan for your health.
Document and Plan Follow-Up
Your Nurse Practitioner will record the details of your visit, including their clinical reasoning and current understanding of your symptoms. They will then create a clear plan for next steps and schedule a follow-up appointment if needed. This follow-up allows your NP to review results, check how your symptoms are progressing, and adjust your care as needed.

FAQ About Nurse Practitioners and Women's Health
How is an NP different from a doctor?
Nurse Practitioners (NP) are registered nurses (RN) with advanced university education and extensive clinical training beyond the RN level.
Like doctors, they can assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of health conditions, prescribe medications, and order tests. The main difference is their training background and care approach; NPs often spend more time with patients, focusing on education, prevention, and collaborative decision-making so you feel fully informed about your care.
What does an NP offer at Colibri NeuroWellness
Our Nurse Practitioner offers a holistic approach to care, addressing not only ADHD, but also Mental Health, and Women’s Health.
In addition, NPs can review your current medications to ensure they are safe and effective, order and interpret tests such as blood work and imaging, and provide preventive care, health screenings, and lifestyle counselling. They diagnose and treat both acute and chronic conditions and offer comprehensive follow-up care to support your ongoing health and well-being.
With Women’s Health especially, this comprehensive perspective helps ensure that all aspects of your health are considered and supported. This includes reviewing heart health and bone health, as well as reproductive and gynecologic health history and helping with issues such as heavy or irregular periods, PMS, and PCOS. Nurse Practitioners can also prescribe treatments for hormone-related conditions and help manage symptoms throughout all stages of menopause.
Do I need a referral to access care?
No referral is needed to see a Nurse Practitioner at Colibri NeuroWellness; you can book an appointment directly with our office. If you ever need specialized care, such as bloodwork, a gynecologist, or a fertility clinic, your Nurse Practitioner can arrange the referral for you.
Can an NP prescribe medication for Hormone Replacement Therapy?
Yes. In Ontario, Nurse Practitioners can prescribe medication for Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for menopause. This includes treatments like estrogen, progesterone, or a combination of both. They will also check in on how you’re feeling and adjust your treatment as needed to make sure it is working well and safely for you.
Can an NP order blood work and imaging tests?
Yes. Nurse Practitioners can order and interpret a wide range of diagnostic tests, including blood work, urine tests, ultrasounds, X-rays, and other imaging studies. They use these results to help confirm diagnoses, monitor ongoing conditions, and guide treatment plans. They also explain your results in a clear and understandable way so you know what they mean for your health.
What happens if I need care outside of what an NP can provide?
If your condition requires specialized care or treatment beyond the NP’s scope, they will refer you to the appropriate specialist, such as a gynecologist or other physician. Your NP will also help coordinate your care, share relevant medical information, and support you through the transition so your treatment remains continuous and well-organized.
Is care with an NP covered by OHIP?
Care with Nurse Practitioners in a private practice is not covered by OHIP. Instead, services are paid for directly by the client or through private insurance plans (e.g., a Health Care Spending Account), depending on your coverage.
Colibri NeuroWellness will provide clear information about fees before your appointment so there are no surprises. This allows for more flexible, accessible care with longer appointments and a focus on your individual health needs.
Why does the Intake Form ask me to add my Health Card?
Appointments with Nurse Practitioners in a private practice are not covered by OHIP, but we will still ask for your Health Card Number while you are filling out your Intake Form.
This is put in place so if you and your Nurse Practitioner decide to start medication as a form of treatment, certain medications, such as medication for ADHD, are classified as “controlled substances”. As controlled substances are strictly regulated, pharmacies require a Health Card Number when filling these prescriptions.
