Why do I feel like this?

You might feel overwhelmed by your emotions, have trouble understanding or expressing your feelings, or notice recurring patterns of distress in your interactions with others. Families or couples might also experience tension, misunderstandings, or changes that have affected their sense of closeness and support. By focusing on the emotional roots of these challenges, EFT can help you gain insight into your feelings and needs.

At Colibri NeuroWellness, we can help you improve communication, and build stronger, more secure relationships with yourself and those around you.

What Is EFT And What Can It Do For You?

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) helps you move beyond surface-level concerns to address deeper emotional needs and patterns in your life.

EFT, developed by clinical psychologist and researcher Dr. Sue Johnson, is based on the idea that emotions play a central role in how we experience life and respond to challenges. By exploring the patterns in your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that may be causing distress or keeping you stuck, as well as uncovering the underlying emotions, EFT helps you gain insight into your needs and experiences.

The process encourages you to express your feelings more openly and develop healthier ways of coping. Over time, this approach can lead to greater emotional balance, relief from difficult feelings, and improved well-being. EFT can be effective for individuals, teens, couples, and families, and is especially helpful for those dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or unresolved grief and trauma.

At Colibri NeuroWellness, we can help you identify and interrupt negative thought or behavioural patterns and explore the underlying emotions, such as fear or loneliness, that often drive these patterns.

What Can EFT Help With?
Find clarity, safety, and closeness

As you become more aware of your emotions, you can communicate your needs more clearly and listen more effectively to others. This greater emotional awareness helps you respond with empathy and understanding, rather than reacting automatically or withdrawing. Over time, these skills support healthier, more meaningful connections and make it easier to resolve conflicts and build trust in your relationships.

We will help you learn and practice new coping strategies and emotional tools to help reduce your feelings of depression and anxiety, and support a greater sense of emotional stability and well-being. This may include techniques for calming your mind, shifting negative thought patterns, and building resilience.

EFT focuses on deepening emotional closeness and mutual understanding, whether with a partner, family member, or friend. By expressing your needs and listening to others, you can build stronger, more supportive bonds. This lasting connection helps you feel less alone and more supported in your daily life.

EFT can help improve your sleep by addressing the underlying emotional concerns that may be keeping you awake. By exploring and working through feelings such as anxiety, worry, or unresolved conflicts, EFT helps quiet the mind and reduce nighttime “cognitive racing.” This emotional clarity can make it easier to relax at bedtime, establish healthier sleep routines, and experience more restful sleep.

EFT can help you become aware of repeating patterns in your thoughts, emotions, or behaviours – such as self-criticism, avoidance, or shutting down – that may keep you feeling stuck. By identifying these cycles, you can learn healthier ways to respond and cope, allowing you to move forward and prevent the same challenges from returning.

By working through difficult feelings in therapy, you can begin to let go of emotional burdens that may be holding you back. This process can bring a sense of clarity about your experiences, help you feel more at ease, and empower you to handle challenges with greater confidence. Over time, you may notice increased comfort, resilience, and a stronger sense of control in your life.

EFT supports you in understanding and managing your emotional responses to stress. Through guided conversations and exercises, you learn to identify and express your feelings in healthier ways. This process can reduce the intensity of your stress reactions, help your body recover more quickly from stressful events, and make everyday challenges feel more manageable.

EFT offers a supportive space to gently explore and process grief or traumatic experiences. By working through these emotions at your own pace, you can lessen their impact on your daily life. This process can bring relief, improve emotional balance, and help you regain a sense of hope and resilience.

How Does EFT Work?

EFT works by focusing on the emotional bond between people. Your EFT therapist will guide you through steps such as:

Smiling female couple

Your therapist will help you recognize unhelpful patterns, such as such as negative self-talk, withdrawing from distressing situations, or avoidance, so you can begin working to change the cycle itself.

After identifying the cycle, your therapist will help you explore and understand the underlying emotions and needs that drive these unhelpful patterns. This involves becoming more aware of your deeper feelings, such as fear, sadness, or longing, that may not be immediately obvious.

By acknowledging and expressing these emotions in a safe environment, you can begin to respond differently, develop healthier coping strategies, and create positive change in how you relate to yourself and your experiences.

Your therapist will help you practice new ways of coping, communicating, and relating to yourself or others based on your deeper emotional understanding. This step will help you replace old, unhelpful cycles with more constructive behaviours and emotional experiences, leading to lasting change, greater emotional balance, and improved well-being.

Our approach respects and values diversity, offering support that honours your unique strengths and needs. We create an inclusive environment where you feel understood and accepted, tailoring our care to empower you on your individual journey.

Your therapist will guide you in reinforcing the positive changes you’ve made, building confidence in your ability to handle challenges, and applying what you’ve learned to future situations. This stage will help ensure that the healthier ways of responding and coping have become part of your everyday life, supporting ongoing emotional well-being and resilience.

Questions About EFT

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a type of counselling that helps you understand and work through your emotions in a safe and supportive environment.

Instead of avoiding or holding back your feelings, EFT encourages you to notice and express them in healthy ways. This approach can help you manage difficult emotions, heal from past experiences, and improve your relationships.

EFT is used in individual, couples, and family therapy and can be helpful for addressing anxiety, depression, trauma, attachment issues, grief and loss, breaking negative cycles, and challenges in relationships.

In a caring and supportive setting, EFT guides you to recognize what triggers strong emotions like sadness, anger, or anxiety, and helps you find healthy and effective ways to cope with them.

By looking at how past experiences affect your current feelings, EFT gives you a chance to express and work through your emotions. This process can help you feel more balanced and confident when dealing with everyday stress.

The length of time it takes to see results depends on your individual needs and how involved you are in the process. Some people notice improvements in understanding their emotions and communicating better within the first few sessions.

If you are working through deeper issues like trauma or long-standing patterns, it may take several months to see bigger changes. EFT is designed to help you make lasting improvements, so while it can take time, the goal is long-term recovery and growth.

In a session, your therapist will make sure you feel safe and supported so you can explore your feelings openly. You’ll start by talking about what brought you to therapy and how it’s affecting your emotions. Your therapist will help you recognize and express feelings, even ones you may not have noticed or have been holding back.

Together, you’ll talk through difficult emotions and experiences, and learn new ways to cope and feel better. Sessions usually include meaningful conversations, activities to help you understand your emotions, and guidance on how to process your feelings in a healthy way.
